Lessons Learned: Advice

The coaster project was the most valuable project for me; it combined the machining of the coaster with earning our HAAS CNC Milling certification. Although, to succeed it is crucial to start early and dedicate time to practicing with the tooling and the operation basics. The CNC machine might seem intimidating, but the more time you spend with it, the more comfortable you will get.

I recommend using the in-class demo as a foundation but take the time to understand the machines' function which includes the control panel, programming steps, and the safety features like the E-stop and feed hold. As mentioned, practicing installing and removing tools is essential practice, so that when the time comes, you're able to securely fasten and align your piece within the specified fixture (the fixture was made by another CSU student!) as well correctly go through the procedure.

Cost Estimate

Considerations

Raw Material:
- 0.125" x 6" Aluminum Rectangle Bar (6061 - T6511) is $14.86
- The part only uses approximately 3.6in., per-piece material cost approximately $8.91

Labor Cost:
Machinist Hourly Rate: $25.92/hr.
Machining Time: 1 hour
Total Labor Cost: $25.92

Total Cost:
Raw material: $8.91
Labor: $25.92
Total: $34.83/ coaster

Efficiency Improvement Proposal

Considering a bulk purchase for the raw stock in custom dimensions to the 3.6" pre-cut bar could reduce prep time during the production process

Stock Preparation

Error Detection

Using something like a probe system for measurements could verify the stock position and its alignment before the operating begins

Mass Production Cost: 10,000 units

This cost comparison shows show producing 10,000 units with an automated process is faster and more cost-efficient. With a total of $259,200 as opposed to $348,300 in the EMEC which would include manual labor costs.
