Displacement by Design

How Transportation Systems Divide or Connect People and Places

Neutrality of Transportation

Every road, highway, and transit system affect the communities that it passes through. But these impacts haven't been shared equally. Historically, transportation projects have displaced neighborhoods, cut off access to opportunity, and concentrated pollution in low-income and minority communities. Equity in transportation means asking who these systems are designed for. Engineers must be equipped not just with technical skills, but with the awareness to design infrastructure that uplifts and connects all communities.

Pollution Not Distributed Equally

As a result of disproportionate pollution many low-income and minority communities experience elevated rates of illnesses as well as shortened lifespans.
